Leeds United news: Pundit drops ‘huge’ promotion prediction after ‘catastrophe’

Leeds United will earn promotion back to the Premier League through the play-offs.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham United and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie blasted the squad for their shock defeat against QPR on Friday (26 April), but claimed they have enough to win promotion the hard way.

Their 4-0 defeat against the Hoops means second-place Ipswich need just a point against Huddersfield Town on Saturday (4 May) to end their 24-year stint out of the top flight regardless of the Whites’ result against Southampton.

However, Daniel Farke’s side have had a string of poor results in recent weeks having managed just one win in their last five attempts and will most likely have to earn promotion through the unpredictable play-offs – which Leeds’ history suggests will be a tough ask.

Leeds have ‘let themselves down’ with woeful form – McAvennie

McAvennie claimed that the club have “let themselves down” but still predicted play-off triumph for the Whites.

“It’s an absolute catastrophe for Leeds,” he told Football Insider.

“I said I thought they’d come up through the playoffs and I still think they will.

“Ipswich are playing Huddersfield who are already relegated, so they’ll get at least the point they need to go up.

“It’s huge for Ipswich, but I want to see Leeds back up in the Premier League.

“It’s a better competition with Leeds because they’re an institution, not just a football club.

“I hope they do it, but they had it in their own hands and they let themselves down.

“They have no one to blame but themselves.

“There’s no point in feeling sorry for them and there’s no point in the players feeling sorry for themselves.

“They have to go and do it.”
