Leeds United news: Raphinha hailed as controversial footage analysed- pundit

Alan Hutton has lauded Leeds United attacker Raphinha for the passion he showed in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old showed the right “aggression”, unlike teammate Luke Ayling.

As seen in footage relayed by Sky Sports from Sunday’s game (8 May), Raphinha was booked for angrily remonstrating with referee Chris Kavanagh during the VAR check for Ayling’s tackle on Gabriel Martinelli.

The English defender saw his yellow card upgraded to a red, which invoked an aggressive response from the Brazilian.

Hutton hailed Raphinha for his response but insisted he needs to ensure his behaviour does not “cross the line”.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You want to see fight within the team. You don’t want to see people just giving up and thinking: ‘Alright, we’re going to go down, there’s nothing we can do.’

“Really, you want people to run through brick walls, you want to see the passion and the aggression.

“But it can’t go over the line. Ayling went over the line, that’s the problem. You need to know when to think: ‘Right, I need to be aggressive here but I need to keep a lid on it.’

“So yeah, it’s good to see (from Raphinha) so long as he keeps his head because he’s got a lot to give Leeds. He’s the type of player that can get them out of a situation. You do want to see that fire in his belly, which is obviously a good thing.”

Raphinha has been booked seven times in 32 Premier League appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Ayling will sit out the rest of the campaign after his dismissal.
