Leeds United news: Stefan Borson drops ‘disastrous’ points deduction verdict
Leeds United are doing everything to avoid being hit with a “big” points deduction next season after selling Crysencio Summerville to West Ham.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s important Leeds remain within the financial rules as a points deduction would be “disastrous” for their promotion hopes.
Summerville is the second big-name player to leave Elland Road after Archie Gray joined Tottenham in a £30million deal to ensure the Championship side didn’t commit a spending breach for 2023-24.
The 22-year-old has made the switch to West Ham for £25million plus add-ons, which is considerably less than Leeds were believed to be looking for at the start of the transfer window.
Leeds United owners won’t risk landing points deduction
Borson revealed the club’s owners are not going to risk breaching the financial rules and potentially derail their chances of promotion back to the Premier League.
“I think there will be a financial element to the Summerville deal,” Borson told Football Insider.
“But they have also got to look at how they can invest in the side to get themselves back in the Premier League.
“We know that the new Leeds owners have got big ambitions.
“But the thing that they can’t do and they can’t risk is a very big points deduction in the EFL next season.
“That would be disastrous for them because they will want to get back into the Premier League as soon as possible.
“They won’t want to risk falling from a promotion place into a play-off place or out of the play-off places completely.

“You can understand them taking a view that they are not going to take any risks in relation to PNS and, therefore, would rather sell players.
“But the fee for Summerville looks possibly less than we would have thought.”
