Noel Whelan has claimed Leeds United defender Ben White is facing the “biggest test of his career” against West Brom tonight.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward explained how the centre-back, 21, is set to be challenged hugely by Slaven Bilic’s table-toppers.
White has started all nine of Leeds’ Championship matches this season since joining on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.
He has formed an impressive centre-back partnership with Liam Cooper but a West Brom attack of Charlie Austin, Matt Phillips and Grady Diangana poses a new challenge.
“It will be a massive test for Ben White, probably the biggest test of his career,” Whelan told Football Insider. “It’s a huge test for Liam Cooper as well.
“West Brom are full of confidence, scoring goals and well organised from front to back by Slaven Bilic. No disrespect to Charlton, but this is a completely different level of opponent.
“It’s Leeds’ biggest test of the season against a team I expect to be challenging for automatic promotion until the end of the campaign.
“They’ve got outstanding forwards who can trouble any defence at this level. Charlie Austin is a proven Premier League striker, Diangana has lit up the Championship and Phillips is their top scorer this season.”
White is set to start his 10th league match of the campaign tonight after spending the previous campaigns on loan at Peterborough United and Newport County.
He has replaced summer departee Pontus Jansson as a mainstay of the defence and his accomplished performances were rewarded with the PFA Championship player of the month award in August.
