Sources: Leeds United set sights on Josko Gvardiol amid £27m reveal

Leeds United are stepping up their interest in signing RB Leipzig star Josko Gvardiol, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League club have tracked the Croatia international, 20, for more than two years and came close to signing him in the summer of 2020.

A Leeds source told Football Insider that director of football Victor Orta and his recruitment team have continued to keep close tabs on Gvardiol.

His recent matches have been scouted by United as they weigh up a move going into the summer window.

There is extensive interest in the defender, who is mainly a centre-back but can also play left-back, from other Premier League clubs.

Leipzig paid Dinamo Zagreb around £18million for Gvardiol two years ago and now value him around the £27m mark.

The youngster is under contract at the Red Bull Arena until 2026.

He was loaned back to Dinamo Zagreb after he signed for Leipzig at the outset of last season.

Gvardiol has now replaced Dayot Upamecano, who joined Bayern Munich last summer, at the heart of the Leipzig defence.

His 39 appearances for Domenico Tedesco’s side this term have yielded two goals and three assists.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch will be very familiar with Gvardiol from his time working within the Red Bull multi-club network.

He will hope Gvardiol can add some solidity to a Leeds side that have conceded more goals this season, 68, than any other in the Premier League.

Marsch has, however, stemmed the flow since his arrival in late February and the Whites are now unbeaten in their last four.
