Sources: Leeds United set sights on surprise move for Carlos Corberan

Leeds United have set their sights on a shock move for Carlos Corberan after his Huddersfield Town exit, sources have told Football Insider.

The Championship club announced on Thursday that the Spaniard, 39, had quit as manager, hours after it was revealed by Football Insider.

Corberan is believed to be under consideration for a return to Leeds, two years after leaving the club.

The Yorkshire giants need a first-team coach and Corberan remains very close to director of football Victor Orta.

Corberan spent three years in total at Leeds, initially joining as under-23s manager before being promoted to first-team coach after Marcelo Bielsa’s appointment in June 2018.

He came within one game of taking Huddersfield to the Premier League in 2021-22, losing to Nottingham Forest in the play-off final.

He would not be the first recent Championship boss to join the backroom staff at a top-flight side this summer – Neil Critchley has left Blackpool for a job at Aston Villa, while Mark Warburton has joined West Ham from QPR.

Corberan’s departure from the John Smith’s Stadium came just three weeks from Huddersfield’s 2022-23 season opener against Burnley.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (7 July) that the West Yorkshire side are plotting an approach for MK Dons boss Liam Manning to be Corberan’s replacement.

Corberan meanwhile would join Franz Schiemer, Cameron Toshack and Mark Jackson as one of Jesse Marsch’s key lieutenants behind the scenes at Thorp Arch.
