Medical guru hails 'superb' Leeds staff after update today on 'life-threatening' Firpo incident

The medical staff at Leeds United are “superb” and cannot be faulted for how they deal with potentially deadly concussion incidents.

That is the view of medical expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in injury and data analysis.

Left-back Junior Firpo had to be substituted in the second half of Leeds’ 2-0 defeat to West Ham in the FA Cup last Sunday (9 January).

The Spaniard collided with Whites goalkeeper Illan Meslier on the stroke of half-time but played on after concussion protocols had been carried out.

But Firpo complained of dizziness 20 minutes into the second period and was instantly replaced by youngster Cody Drameh.

Firpo has declared himself fit to play against West Ham again in the league on Sunday (16 January), as per Leeds Live today (14 January).

Dinnery hailed the Leeds staffers for how they dealt with the incident.

“There are a lot of grey areas with regards to this,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“But any medical department or physio that is going on the pitch, the health and safety of the player is paramount for them.

“So with regards to making a judgement call over whether a player can carry on, there will be no doubt in their minds.

“The first head injury isn’t the primary concern, it’s the potential of a second one that is what you really have to worry about.

“We’re not just talking about a period on the sidelines, we’re talking life-threatening or life-changing.

“You ask the player a series of questions and hope he responds as he should and nothing else comes up.

“If everything is normal with his movement and there is no question in your mind, great.

“Sometimes those symptoms manifest a little further down the line. Firpo reported a little bit of dizziness and was replaced later in the game.

“It’s always difficult because you don’t have a lot of time to do those on-field assessments.

“There’s a lot of talk about concussion substitutes, and there is certainly more that can be done.

“But there are no issues with how Firpo was dealt with. All the medical staff at that level deliver a superb service.”

Clubs competing in top competitions in England are allowed to make an extra substitute in the event of a concussion.

Firpo has featured 16 times for Leeds since his arrival from Barcelona in July (2021).
