Leeds United news: Medical expert predicts ‘total overhaul’ after Patrick Bamford latest

Patrick Bamford may be set for a “total overhaul” of his Leeds United training programme.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Bamford, 29, was visibly upset as he was forced off after just 20 minutes during Leeds’ dramatic 3-2 win at Wolves last Friday (18 March).

The centre-forward’s season has been peppered with injuries, including a recurring foot problem called plantar fasciitis.

Jesse Marsch reassured fans that Bamford’s latest setback is “not so bad” but that the condition has been “sensitive” in recent weeks, per Leeds Live after the Wolves clash.

Dinnery claims that Leeds may remodel Bamford’s training programme to combat his plantar fasciitis.

“It’s very, very difficult because he has been hampered by this for a while now,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It’s one of these conditions where you can train for four days and be absolutely fine and then you have flare-up the night before a match.

“You need to take decisions on a day-by-day basis and decisions on match availability will be taken week by week.

“In the meantime, you’re looking at a total overhaul of some aspects of his programme.

“You need to manage his load and incorporate non-sports-specific training in your daily routine because it is the running, the jumping that aggravates it.

“There may need to be some low-impact cardiovascular work, maybe swimming and cycling. That can ease the load in the foot.

“They may have some sort of insole to support the arch of the foot and alleviate some of the pressure and ease the pain.

“It’s caused by inflammation and is very painful. There may be injections to help him as well.

“Hopefully he can gradually increase the load so he can take part in full training without any reaction.”

Bamford has registered two goals and three assists in 10 matches this term.

He was one of 10 Leeds players sidelined at the last count before the international break.
