Kieran Maguire: Pay cut possible for Leeds United stars after new finance reveal

Leeds United players would likely see a reduction in their wages if plans to relaunch the Super League are successful.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the impact the breakaway competition would have on Europe’s domestic leagues.

The Super League has recently ramped up its efforts to win support from fans, with Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona still committed to the project.

As relayed by Sport Business last Friday (2 December), a new report from KPMG estimates that the Super League would wipe out 55 per cent of domestic leagues’ revenue.

This would leave ambitious clubs like Leeds unable to pay the same level of wages to their playing staff, explains Maguire.

“This will come as a surprise to nobody that has an affection for English football,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

The game is being carved up in the interests of the few. They have been trying to do this for a long time, as we know.

“It would, however, mean for a club such as Leeds that there would have to be a major realignment in terms of its cost base.

This would mean that player wages would likely to be impacted. The analysts report that 95 per cent of players would likely see a reduction in their wages.

That would effectively also create a two-tier Premier League where the existing haves and have-nots are very much amplified.
