Leeds United tipped to pay ‘premium’ as two signings from Germany mooted – pundit

Leeds United will have to pay a “premium tax” on transfers following the sale of Kalvin Phillips and prospective departure of Raphinha.

That is the view of former Arsenal and Everton striker Kevin Campbell, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the current transfer situation at Elland Road.

On Monday (4 July), Leeds United confirmed Kalvin Phillips had joined Man City on a permanent deal.

The Premier League champions will pay £45million for the centre-midfielder with another £5million in add-ons.

According to Fabrizio Romano (30 June), Raphinha is also on the verge of leaving Elland Road in a big-money deal.

Chelsea are said to have agreed a £60million deal with the Whites for the Brazil international.

When asked by Football Insider if Leeds could be held to ransom by club’s after a sudden influx of cash, Campbell said: “Welcome to the Premier League.

“The Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha show. It was always going to leave Leeds vulnerable if they left.

“Now people know that Leeds have money. They are going to have to pay that premium tax on future signings. That is just the way it is.

“It is going to be interesting. Recruitment is going to be key.

“It would not surprise me if Jesse Marsch goes to Germany to get a couple of players in for his revolution. He may look to do it that way.”
