Leeds United to land £10m windfall after deal agreed – Stefan Borson
Leeds United are still likely to earn £10million a year from their new kit deal with Adidas despite failing to secure promotion back to the Premier League.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the money they receive could be structured around merchandise sales rather than a guaranteed fee.
Leeds agreed an initial five-year deal with Adidas ahead of their first season back in the Premier League in 2020.
In what was a record-breaking deal for the West Yorkshire giants, they are understood to have earned around £10million per season.
Leeds confirmed on 30 October they have now agreed an extension to their partnership with the German manufacturer.
The extension comes after a record-breaking launch for the club’s away kit this season, having sold 15,000 shirts on the first day alone.
Leeds United deal to be based around kit sales
Borson revealed the deal is still likely to be on similar terms to their previous agreement with Adidas despite Daniel Farke’s side playing in the Championship again this season.
“It probably won’t be worth less than when they were in the Premier League,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I suspect they are taking a view that relatively speaking it’s actually a high-generating replica deal.
“The £10million could effectively be a projection as opposed to a guaranteed payment.
“We know that with Newcastle, we saw in the competition commission statement the way the Newcastle deal is structured is not quite as it’s been described in the press and it’s not a guaranteed amount.

“It is dependent on sales, so it’s really a structure around how you are going to be remunerated if the sales of the kit come through.
“I suspect that Leeds sell a decent amount of kit anyway, even in the Championship.”
