Leeds United told to save Kalvin Phillips’ career after ‘disastrous’ twist – pundit

Kalvin Phillips should return to Leeds United after his “disastrous” loan spell at West Ham United.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hammers and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie claimed Phillips, 28, is in the midst of a “downward spiral” and a return to Elland Road could help him revive his career.

The Whites are interested in a reunion with the midfielder this summer, with Football Insider revealing (24 February) that Phillips is one of their top targets after his failed spells at Man City and the Irons.

Reportedly, City could be willing to let him go for £25million in the off-season – a major reduction on the £45million they splashed out to Leeds for his services in the summer of 2022.

Leeds United should bring Kalvin Phillips back

Phillips was a favourite at Leeds, but his current loan at the London Stadium has been far from a success amid a fallout with Hammers fans and consistently poor displays.

McAvennie claimed it was “shameful” that Phillips was not match fit, but suggested a full pre-season back with his former side could prove fruitful for him and Leeds.

“I think Phillips is on a downward spiral at the moment,” he told Football Insider.

“Everything he touches is disastrous.

“Kalvin shouldn’t have been on the pitch [for West Ham against Newcastle United].

“He’s not had a run of games for ages.

“Wherever he goes after West Ham, he needs a good pre-season under his belt.

“He was at Man City for such a long time and never played – that impacts you.

“He’s nowhere near match fitness – it’s shameful.

“But if he went back to Leeds, he could make a comeback – I would send him back.

“He needs a few good games under his belt in pre-season.

“I wish him well.”
