Exclusive: Leeds backed to sign 'Really special' striker after £18m release clause revealed
Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to sign the “really, really special” Ollie Watkins this summer as the striker prepares for the Championship play-off final on Tuesday.
The former Whites and Coventry forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that £18million would be a “good price” for the 24-year-old.
The Athletic‘s David Ornstein said he had heard that the Brentford striker has a release clause in his contract which could be triggered for as little as £18million this summer.
The Daily Mail report that Watkins has been discussed as a potential target at Elland Road after an incredibly successful season at Griffin Park.
The English centre-forward has scored 26 goals in 49 appearances this season with one game left to play – the Championship play-off final tomorrow night.
When asked by Football Insider if he would be a welcome addition at Elland Road, Whelan said:

“I really hope that Fulham can do the job on Tuesday so we can have him at Leeds United.
“When you look at his age, his attributes and the season that he has had, anywhere in and around the £18million region would be a good price.
“He is a really, really special player. He has been converted from a winger into a centre-forward and that is not easy to do. That is a difficult task because you need a different skill set but he can hold the ball, he has pace, strength and is clinical in front of goal.
“He knows where the back of the net is and those sort of players cost money.“
