‘Leeds United’s manager shortlist worries me after Farke sack latest’

Leeds United have been linked with a host of well-known names as they weigh up Daniel Farke’s future at Elland Road.

Football Insider revealed last week (25 April) that Jose Mourinho, Steven Gerrard and Lee Carsley are all under consideration at the Yorkshire giants.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Roger Schmidt and Davide Ancelotti have also been linked with the role in the media.

The Guardian reported on Monday (28 April) that 49ers chief and Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe is flying in from San Francisco for talks on the manager’s future.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has shared a “worrying” verdict on Leeds’ manager shortlist.

Leeds should not make ‘foolish’ Farke decision, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness has insisted Leeds would be “foolish” to sack Farke for someone who isn’t “proven” in the Premier League.

He achieved promotion back to the top flight at the second time of asking after leading the Whites to a play-off final defeat last season.

Wyness insisted many of the managers linked with the potential vacancy are not Premier League quality.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “What worries me is the list of candidates I’ve seen for Leeds.

“I’ve seen Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Steven Gerrard, Roger Schmidt.

“The worst one, for me, would Davide Ancelotti. His father is heading out of Real Madrid, but he’s not the right level for the Premier League yet.

“I don’t think any of those managers are.

“If you’re going to sack Farke, it’s got to be for a proven Premier League manager. That’s the only reason to do that.

“Farke is not a bad bet going forward – maybe for one year.

“You need three phases – one to get up, one to stay up and one to push on. Farke can do the first two, but not the third.

“Unless there’s a dramatic improvement in the quality of candidate, they’d be foolish to sack him.”

Leeds turn attention to England international

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown has told Football Insider (29 April) that Leeds are plotting a move to sign Wolves and England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Leeds plan to sell Illan Meslier and replace him with a top-class goalkeeper, with a number of options on their radar.

The 25-year-old Whites shot-stopper has made multiple costly errors this season, leading to Farke‘s decision to axe him from his starting XI in the closing stages of the season.
