Leeds United’s Premier League transfer budget revealed – ‘by my calculations’
Leeds United will be putting plans in place for a potential return to the Premier League despite dropping to third in the Championship in recent weeks.
The Whites have six games to secure a top-two finish but could also face a second consecutive play-off campaign against the likes of Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Bristol City, Coventry and more.
Leeds announced their accounts for the 2023-24 campaign last week (2 April), revealing a huge £60.8million loss for the season.
The Yorkshire giants still owe a whopping £142million in transfer fees after their previous lavish spending in the Premier League.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed what Leeds could have to spend should they ascend back to the top flight.
Leeds face summer budget of just £20m, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Leeds will have just £20million of leeway under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) if they return to the top flight.
The Whites can pay fees above that figure by amortising the cost of any new signings over several years.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
1 | Burnley | 40 | 84 | 43 |
2 | Sheffield United | 40 | 83 | 26 |
3 | Leeds United | 40 | 82 | 51 |
But Wyness suggested Leeds will struggle to build a Premier League squad.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I believe Leeds will, my calculations show, have around £20million of leeway in the PSR budget.
“If you’re going up, that ain’t a lot of leeway to strengthen in the Premier League.
“Leeds have got to do what they tried before, by clinging on for the first season and then build on the Premier League revenue.
“The 49ers are going to have to be very clever with how they do that.
“They’ve shown they’re not afraid to invest, and there’s every chance they will back the club with more shareholder money.
“But in terms of PSR, they’ve got to watch it closely.”

‘Daniel Farke will be sacked at Leeds’
Meanwhile, Football Insider has been told by industry expert Mick Brown (7 April) that Daniel Farke will be sacked by Leeds United if they fail to achieve promotion back to the Premier League.
The German led his side to last season’s Championship playoff final where they were defeated by Southampton.
Farke is under contract at Elland Road until June 2027 after arriving almost two years ago.
