‘Leeds United’s rivals will block big-money transfer plan’

Leeds United must get their transfer business spot on this summer as they bid to buck the trend for recent promoted sides.

The Premier League has relegated each of the last six clubs to make the jump from the Championship.

Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) are restrictive for top-flight clubs – who can lose just £105million over three years, and even less if any of those seasons were spent in the Championship.

However, Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (7 May) that Leeds will have a budget of £150million for transfer fees and wages this summer.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has shared a new claim on the Whites’ summer business.

Tottenham & Man United would block Leeds rule change, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed rivals like Tottenham and Man United would be vehemently against giving promoted clubs the full £105million PSR loss allowance – a rule change which would have to be voted through.

Both Spurs and United are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League and could have been in relegation danger this term with a stronger showing from Southampton, Leicester or Ipswich.

Wyness claimed the current rules for promoted sides are “grossly unfair”.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I know they’re going to be spending around £20million in promotion bonuses. That’s a big number to come off the expenditure.

“There’s a real issue for promoted clubs. I think they should be allowed to increase the amount they are allowed to spend.

“That would have to be approved by the Premier League overall, and clubs like Man United and Tottenham in 16th or 17th would vote against that.

“They wouldn’t want promoted clubs to improve their spending power.

“Why would they want them to have a better chance? It’s grossly unfair.

“The allowance coming up from the Championship isn’t the full allowance. Leeds have to stay up for another two seasons to have the full allowance.”

Leeds have serious Joel Piroe questions

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (6 May) that Leeds will not build their attack around Championship top scorer Joel Piroe in the Premier League.

He scored the second-tier’s most goals in the 2024-25 campaign with 19.

However, it is believed Leeds have question marks over Piroe’s ability to make the step up and will not count on him as their first-choice striker next season.
