Leeds United are on the verge of signing goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez from Premier League giants Arsenal, according to a report.
Spanish newspaper AS claimed in their print edition on Tuesday that that the 25-year-old is edging towards a last-ditch move to Elland Road before Wednesday night’s transfer deadline.
Martinez is currently on loan at La Liga outfit Getafe, but has made just four appearances in all competitions after being shipped out by Arsenal on a temporary basis in the summer.
The Gunners, who have reached the last-16 of the Champions League, would have to terminate the Argentine’s deal at Getafe in order to let him join Leeds, but AS does not report whether or not his switch to Yorkshire would be permanent or a loan.
This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed that back-up goalkeeper Andy Lonergan was a target of Sunderland and the Whites had been in talks with the Wearside club over a potential swap deal before the transfer window slams shut.
Football Insider verdict
It’s hard to believe that Martinez is still on the books at Arsenal having barely ever played for them in all his time at the Emirates. He is well down Arsene Wenger’s pecking order and that shows by him being sent out to Getafe. It also appears that he is out of the reckoning there too and it would be a bit of a surprise of the Gunners decided to tear up that deal just for him to play second fiddle to someone else at Leeds. Felix Wiedwald has not been brilliant since being signed up from Werder Bremen in the summer, but he is still the best option that the Whites have. Martinez is a bit of an unknown quantity due to the lack of game-time in his career, but he is clued up a bit more on the Championship after previous loan spells with Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday.
