Leeds on the verge of Serie A forward signing – reliable journalist
By Danny Wright
Leeds are close to signing Caleb Ekuban from Serie A side Chievo, according to a reliable journalist.
Italian reporter Gianluigi Longari, who works for TV Dello Sporto, claimed on his personal Twitter account on Friday that the Whites are on the verge of completing a deal for the forward, who spent last season on loan in the Albanian top flight.
GhanaSoccerNet has previously reported that Thomas Christiansen’s former club APOEL Nicosia were also in the race for Ekuban, as well as others who had tabled offers.
However it now seems that the Whites have won the race to land the 23-year-old, whose goals fired Partizan Tirana to a second place finish in the Albanian Superliga last term.
In 42 appearances across all competitions, Ekuban found the net on 18 occasions and supplied five assists during his loan spell in the Balkans, and that goal scoring record clearly bodes well with Christiansen, who seems keen to add to the Whites’ firepower.
Chris Wood was the only Leeds player to score more than ten goals last season as he found the net 30 times, while no one else managed to score more than six.
Football Insider Verdict
Ekuban looks like another little-known player to be heading to Elland Road this summer, following in the foot-steps of Mateusz Klich, Madger Gomes and Felix Wiedwald. The Ghanaian striker looks like he knows where the goal is, but moving from the Albanian top flight to the Championship is more of a leap than a step. Wood should still be the one leading the line in Christiansen’s side next term. Souleymane Doukara and Marcus Antonsson are the Whites’ back-up options and having four strikers in a team that usually one makes use of one in the starting line-up doesn’t add up. One of Doukara and Antonsson could leave the Yorkshire giants to create more balance.
In other Leeds news, United are plotting a move for this defender from one of their bitter rivals.
