Leeds will storm to play-offs if they sign this Celtic defender reportedly available in Jan

COMMENT

Leeds United are expected to make a couple of additions to their squad in the January transfer window as Thomas Christiansen looks to fill a few gaps in his squad.

One area of the Whites side that is in need of adding depth is to their centre-back options and Christiansen should look no further than Celtic to add some much-needed quality.

The Scottish Sun has reported that Erik Sviatchenko is set to exit Celtic Park in January and that gives Leeds the perfect chance to make a swoop for the Denmark international.

Leeds were desperate for an extra centre-back earlier this season due to injuries and suspensions plaguing Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington.

Christiansen should have learned that he really needs a fourth centre-back at his club and a cut-price deal to sign a fellow Dane in Sviatchenko, 26, is on the cards.

It is understood that Championship sides are interested in the former Midtjylland defender, who was the subject of a £2.7million bid from FC Copenhagen in the summer.

However since the summer transfer window shut, Sviatchenko has not played a single match for Celtic as he clearly isn’t fancied by Brendan Rodgers, who would rather play midfielders and full-backs out of position than play the Danish centre-back.

Sviatchenko would be a quality signing for Leeds and would help them storm up the Championship table to achieve a play-off spot come the end of the season.

Strength in depth is paramount for launching an assault on the top six and at the moment, there is a distinct lack of that in the centre-back area at Elland Road.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have terminated the deal of this striker as he heads to one of the clubs’ Championship rivals.
