Leicester City face ‘worst-case scenario’ after points deduction confession

Leicester City are doomed to relegation back to the Championship after promotion as second-tier champions last season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s side are 15 points adrift of safety with seven games of the Premier League season left to play – and have not scored in eight top-flight games.

To compound the misery, Leicester announced a loss of £19.4million for last season – and admitted they expect conversations to continue over a potential Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) breach.

In a statement, the Foxes confessed there is a “risk of sanction by the relevant governing body, but at the current time it is impracticable to estimate the likely impact of any such sanction.”

Everton and Nottingham Forest were previously deducted points for breaching PSR rules.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Leicester’s “worst-case scenario is coming true”.

Leicester could be in ‘a world of hurt’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he believes Leicester will face problems down the road.

The Foxes remain in arbitration with the Premier League after exploiting a loophole to escape a PSR punishment for the 2022-23 campaign.

Wyness claimed Leicester will be in “a world of hurt” if that goes against the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s a sad situation.

“We said at the time that Van Nistelrooy wasn’t the solution, and unfortunately that’s proven to be the case.

“Leicester didn’t endear themselves to the Premier League with the way they got through the loophole previously.

“Coming back to face the music in the EFL, it’s going to be difficult.

“They’ll be tight on PSR, even though they haven’t spent a lot. You’re going from £35million a year in allowed losses to £13million in the EFL, don’t forget.

“It’s a complex situation. It’s still in arbitration, in terms of an appeal from the Premier League over their last full season of figures.

“If they were to lose that, they’d be in a world of hurt.

“I’m afraid their worst-case scenario is coming true and I think we’re going to see some serious issues at Leicester in the coming year.

“I do believe there will be problems down the road for them.”

Leicester face new Premier League investigation

Meanwhile, Leicester are facing questions after accusations have emerged around advertisements for their gambling sponsors.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider (30 March) that there will have to be an investigation into the matter.

Everton and Leicester have been accused by an anti-gambling body of breaching the Gambling Commission’s demands by advertising gambling firms which are now unlicensed in the UK.
