‘Leicester City facing brutal double relegation after confirmed news’
Leicester City have confirmed they lost £19million in their Championship title-winning campaign last term.
The Foxes are now staring down the barrel of an immediate relegation back to the second-tier under manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Leicester are 15 points adrift of 17th-place Wolves in the Premier League table and have not scored in their last eight top-flight games.
Finance expert Stefan Borson has told Football Insider (11 April) that the club’s previous Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues will fall into the hands of the EFL after relegation – who could then dish out a potential points deduction.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has suggested Leicester could even drop to League One if things continue as they are.
Leicester on downward trajectory after recent issues, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed the 2015-16 Premier League title winners are “running out of quality to sell” and remedy their finances.
Harvey Barnes, James Maddison and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall are among the big-name players to depart the King Power Stadium in recent seasons.
Position | Team | Played | Points | GD |
17 | Wolves | 31 | 32 | -16 |
18 | Ipswich Town | 31 | 20 | -34 |
19 | Leicester City | 31 | 17 | -45 |
20 | Southampton | 31 | 10 | -51 |
Wyness insisted the £19million loss is not too bad – but suggested Leicester are nevertheless in for a tough time next season.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “£19million isn’t too bad, compared to some of the numbers they’ve had in the past.
“If they’re going to escape a points deduction next season, they have to sell – but they are running out of quality to sell now.
“They did most of the selling in the last couple of years.
“They’ll have to do whatever they can. It’s going to be tight.
“The Championship is very tough and they’ve got to keep a squad good enough to deal with it.
“Could they even go down another division? It wouldn’t be the end of the world, we’ve seen it happen with Southampton, Leeds and Leicester in the past.
“We’ll have to wait and see, but I think they have a very tough year in store.”

‘Strong possibility’ Van Nistelrooy could leave Leicester
Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (9 April) that Leicester will hold discussions over the immediate future of Van Nistelrooy as manager once their relegation is confirmed.
Sources have told Football Insider that there is a “strong possibility” the 48-year-old could leave once the club are officially relegated to the Championship.
Industry expert Mick Brown has told Football Insider (8 April) that Leicester are considering ex-Everton boss Sean Dyche and former Southampton manager Russell Martin as potential successors for Van Nistelrooy.
