Leicester City fans react excitedly to West Brom relegation ‘lifeline’

Leicester City fans have flocked to social media to react to news that Championship relegation rivals West Brom have been charged with alleged financial breaches by the EFL.

Leicester and West Brom are each stuck in the second-tier relegation battle with just four games left to play this season.

The Foxes are sitting 23rd in the table with 41 points, while the Baggies currently occupy 20th place with 46 points, but that could soon be set to change.

According to a new report from The Telegraph, West Brom have been charged with allegedly breaching the EFL’s profit and sustainability rules for last season, and are now facing the threat of a points deduction.

The club are reportedly trying to delay any punishment regarding points totals until next season, but EFL guidelines state that sanctions must be applied in the season after the breach, and so they could soon be pushed closer to relegation.

Leicester fans offer mixed reactions to news of West Brom charges

Leicester themselves have seen six points deducted from their tally this season after they were found to have breached the same PSR rules during their 2023-24 Championship campaign.

They are currently on a run of one league win in their last 16 games, with Oxford and Portsmouth both also above them in the relegation battle alongside the Baggies.

Any deduction for the Hawthorns club would boost the Foxes’ chances of staying up, but their fans are undecided over whether it would make much difference.

Taking to X, one fan said: “We have a lifeline,” while another proclaimed: “WE ARE STAYING UP.”

While another offered a different view, adding: “We absolutely deserve to be relegated and shouldn’t be given a ticket out of it because of another team getting deducted points.”

And one supporter wrote: “You telling me there’s hope??” with laughing and praying emojis.

What are Opta’s current Championship relegation predictions?

Leicester’s 1-0 defeat to Swansea on Saturday felt like a fatal blow to their survival hopes, but any deduction to West Brom’s total could give them a huge lift ahead of the last four games of the campaign.

Sources have told Football Insider that Leicester have breached PSR rules again, based on their latest accounts, but any sanction will not apply to this season.

They face 21st-placed Portsmouth next weekend, who first host Ipswich in midweek, with an unlikely win seeing them almost safe on 48 points.

Opta currently predict that Leicester will be playing in League One next season, with an 86.64 per cent chance of relegation.

Oxford are set to join them and Sheffield Wednesday, with a 50.46 per cent chance of going down compared to Portsmouth’s 29.02 per cent and Albion’s 19.94 per cent chance, but that could all change soon.
