Leicester City news: Ex-PL CEO suggests real reason for Graham Potter collapse
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Graham Potter “wasn’t the right personality” to take the Leicester City hot seat.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Steve Cooper is a better fit after his “baptism of fire” with Nottingham Forest.
Football Insider revealed earlier this month (10 June) that Potter had been in pole position to be named the new Leicester manager after holding talks with club officials about the position.
But talks broke down and the Midlands club appointed Cooper as the replacement for Enzo Maresca, who left for Chelsea.
Football Insider revealed on Thursday (27 June) that Leicester are likely to face two points deductions next season due to their challenging financial situation.
The club have already been charged with a breach of Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2022-23 campaign, and sources say they are set to land an additional charge for the 2023-24 season.
Potter ‘wasn’t the right personality’ for Leicester, says Wyness
Wyness claimed Leicester face a “very tough season” fraught with “off-field issues” under Cooper.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think it’s a great appointment for Leicester.
“I think they’ll have a very tough season in terms of off-the-field issues. No matter how well they perform, and I wish them luck, they’re going to have a tough time.
“There’s going to be a lot of headlines about them, and I thought that Cooper was the right guy to handle it.
“He had a baptism of fire at Forest, but he handled it with aplomb – he’s the right guy to go forward.
“Potter is a very talented manager but wasn’t the right personality for this challenge.

“Managerial wages aren’t always the biggest. I don’t think that would have come into the decision, unless there was a big difference.
“It wasn’t about the money. Steve is the right one, and he’ll see them through the difficult off-pitch situation.”
