Leicester City points deduction: Wyness shares ‘best-case’ verdict after crushing blow
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Leicester City will give themselves the best chance of fighting through their financial woes by achieving promotion back to the Premier League.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Foxes will have a bigger “buffer” under Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) if they go up.
Leicester reported a loss of almost £90million for the 2022-23 season – taking total losses for their last three Premier League campaigns to over £215million.
Under PSR rules, top-flight clubs are only permitted to lose £105million over three years – and that figure is reduced for every season spent in the Championship.
Leicester have been charged by the Premier League for breaking spending rules and will be subject to a potential points deduction if they return.
Wyness issues crucial Leicester promotion verdict after £90m loss
The Foxes are locked in a three-way battle for promotion back to the top-flight with Leeds and Ipswich.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think they’d prefer to go up and take their chances in the Premier League.
“They’d have a bigger buffer amount in the PSR rules if they were to go up, rather than have that limited by being in the Championship.
“They’d prefer to take their chances up there, I’m sure, and try and fight their way through it.

“That would be the best upside case.
“However, with Ipswich and Leeds also in the race – it’s looking like a really tough battle.”
