New RB Leipzig recruitment chief Paul Mitchell is the driving force behind the club’s pursuit of Tottenham wonderkid Reo Griffiths, according to a report.
ESPN FC claim that the Bundesliga outfit are keeping close tabs on Griffiths, 17, following his goalscoring exploits at youth team level.
It is said that Leipzig have been alerted to the teenage striker by new head of recruitment Mitchell who was formerly in charge of transfers at Spurs until his exit last year and is well aware of the teenager’s undoubted potential.
Griffiths, who is regarded as the new Harry Kane at Tottenham, has scored 20 goals for Tottenham’s Under-18 side so far this season and enhanced his growing reputation with a hat trick in their Premier League Youth Cup semifinal win over Arsenal last weekend.
The teen sensation has featured for England at youth level but is yet to turn professional, opening up the possibility of a transfer.
Football Insider verdict:
Spurs should be concerned at the strong interest of Leipzig in rising star Griffiths. The German high flyers have a firm policy of sourcing outstanding global talent and then handing them first-team opportunities quicker than they would get elsewhere. Tottenham do not do too bad in that area themselves, with Mauricio Pochettino willing to fast-tracking the best of the youth team products, as he has demonstrated with the two Harrys, Kane and Winks. Nevertheless, Mitchell has the inside track of Griffiths and is likely to know which buttons to press to alert the rising star to the possibilities of a move to Germany.
