Leon Balogun expected to quit Rangers after Ibrox contract twist – pundit
Noel Whelan has tipped Leon Balogun to leave Rangers on a free transfer after Connor Goldson signed a new long-term contract.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen striker admitted he would be “surprised” if the 33-year-old is also handed a new deal, with his current terms expiring this summer.
As confirmed on Wednesday (1 June), Goldson has penned a four-year deal at Ibrox after months of speculation.
He joins the likes of Scott Arfield and Steven Davis in committing their futures to the club.
With no fewer than five other centre-back options at Ibrox, Whelan admitted he cannot see Balogun staying on when his terms expire.
Asked if he thought Goldson’s contract could see Balogun leave Ibrox, Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Yeah. I think when you’re looking at somebody at that age now, and a club is looking to progress long term, you’ve got to think about where you’re putting your money.
“It’s got to be money that’s longevity rather than a short-term fix. I think, after the run in Europe, this is where you look for players who are going to be there long term to come in.
“Not just one-season wonders, but someone that’s going to be there for the next generation in the next three to four years.
“Unfortunately, at 33, you’re then looking to freshen things up. I think Van Bronckhorst will be honest with him.
“I’d be surprised if he signs another contract. I think they’ll go out and start looking to build now for the future.”

Balogun played 19 times under Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Rangers.
He has a total of 65 appearances under his belt for the Glasgow giants.
