Leon Balogun responds to James Tavernier’s message after Rangers latest

Rangers defender Leon Balogun has taken to social media to send a message to James Tavernier after their 3-0 Scottish Premier League win over Aberdeen on Wednesday (January 15).

The 36-year-old came off the bench to score a goal and provide an assist as Philippe Clement’s side closed the gap on Celtic to 13 points.

Tavernier, 33, who hadn’t featured in 2025 before the win over Aberdeen due to injury, also came off the bench in the later stages of the game.

Hamza Igamane opened the scoring after 13 minutes as Rangers capitalised on Aberdeen’s attempt to play out from the back.

Clement pulled the trigger in the final 30 minutes of the game, bringing on the two veteran defenders in the 76th and 79th minutes, respectively.

Balogun bagged his goal in the 93rd minute, towering over the Aberdeen defenders to head Clinton Nsiala’s pinpoint cross past Ross Doohan.

The Nigerian’s clearance then found fellow substitute Cyriel Dessers, allowing him to go one-on-one with Doohan and round off the scoring.

Balogun has been in and out of the side so far this season, starting 11 of his 18 games across all competitions, scoring one goal, and providing one assist in his 1014 minutes of action.

Tavernier, unsurprisingly, has been key, starting 26 of his 30 games across all competitions, scoring three goals, and providing six assists in his 2361 minutes on the field.

The centre-back took to Instagram to respond to his captain, who had shared an image of the two celebrating his goal, saying: “My Skippa.”

Clement’s attention will turn to the Scottish Cup on Sunday (January 19) as they host minnows Fraserburgh in their first game of the season.

Rangers will then travel south to face Man United in what could prove to be a crucial Europa League game for both sides.
