By Dominic Toner

Les Ferdinand believes that Tottenham are on the verge of becoming an elite club in England.

Spurs have been transformed by manager Mauricio Pochettino since his arrival in 2014 and he has helped them challenge at the top-end of the table.

The north London club were involved in a Premier League title race with eventual champions Leicester last season, before falling away at the latter stages and finishing third behind rivals Arsenal.

Spurs have begun the new season in great form despite the setback and are the only unbeaten side in the league.

Pochettino’s side are just three points behind current league leaders Manchester City and are regarded as serious title contenders.

Former Spurs player Ferdinand claims that Spurs are close to becoming one of the top sides in England.

“Tottenham are on the cusp of establishing themselves as one of England’s top sides. I think that first major piece of silverware will open the floodgates,” Ferdinand said, as quoted by Yahoo Sports. “Maybe that first Premier League title is what it’ll take (for people to view Spurs as a top club).

“We’ve seen them progress over the last few years and last season they were excellent…but what was important was that last season wasn’t a one-off and they’ve started really well this year. After the game at the Lane against City, everyone stood up and said ‘wow, they really are title contenders’.”

Spurs have returned to the Champions League this season and the fans are growing in confidence about the quality of the club.

The north London club have not won a piece of silverware since the League Cup in the 2007/08 season, when they beat Chelsea 2-1 in the final with goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Jonathan Woodgate.

They will be hopefully of achieving a first Premier League title this season and cementing their place at the top-end of English football.
