Levy makes major concession to Pochettino at Tottenham – report
By Harry Sykes
Daniel Levy has handed Mauricio Pochettino full control of the Tottenham football operation ahead of the January window, according to a report.
The Telegraph claim that the Spurs manager is well placed to build a football legacy at White Hart Lane after signing a five-year contract in May.
It is said that chairman Levy is concentrating on the club’s new 61,000-capacity stadium being built adjacent to the current venue and “has given Pochettino full control of the football operation, which has not always been the case”.
Tottenham changed Pochettino’s title from ‘head coach’ to ‘manager’ when he signed his new deal, which means the Argentine has greater say in recruitment and contract decisions among other things.
The decision of Levy to hand the Argentine even greater control of football matters is a major concession given the long-standing chairman’s hands-on reputation.
Levy is renowned for historically being the driving force in the club’s recruitment, as well as taking on the crucial role of negotiating transfers and contracts.
He now appears to have ceded powers to Pochettino, who guided the club to a third-place finish last season following the club’s best league campaign of the Premier League era.
Spurs have had a mixed start to the new campaign but are fifth in the division despite losing 1-0 to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
In other Tottenham news, the club have confirmed they are closing in on a major January signing.
