‘Liam Delap to leave Ipswich Town’ after Chelsea reveal – Stefan Borson
Ipswich Town star Liam Delap is likely to leave the club in the summer transfer window as Manchester City decide whether or not to trigger his buy-back clause.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there is going to be a lot of interest in the 21-year-old following his impressive form this season.
Delap joined Ipswich last summer in a £20million deal after seeing his opportunities limited at the Etihad.
The two sides agreed on a buy-back clause, which is believed to be worth around £30million for the England Under-21 international.
The forward has so far registered eight goals and two assists in 19 Premier League appearances since making the move to Portman Road.
Football Insider revealed on 27 November Chelsea are keen on Delap as they look to add to their attacking options.
Ipswich Town face battle to keep Liam Delap
Borson insisted Man City have likely ensured the buy-back clause puts them in a strong position to re-sign their former academy product in the summer.
He told Football Insider: “There is the question about how you execute a deal where you try and effectively sign a player, move him on straight away and take the profit between those two trades.
“Alternatively, you do a deal with Ipswich where you effectively give them the option to buy out the buy-back clause in the deal.
“City have historically not done many of those deals. They did buy-backs on players like Douglas Luiz when he went to Aston Villa and another on Angelino, where they took the profit very quickly after they bought him back again.
“They have done it before, but it’s not that straightforward and we don’t know what the exact clause looks like in respect of Delap. We don’t know how much freedom Delap has to refuse the move.
“You would think City would have made sure they have control of the situation, but you just don’t know until you see the individual clauses.

“But the bottom line is, there does look like there is a very substantial profit in that deal already and City are not going to miss that fact. I think it’s one for the summer, but either way, it looks like he’s going to move from Ipswich.
“Even if they stay up, you just think there is going to be quite a lot of interest in him over the summer.”
