Liam Manning’s odds slashed to return to management at League One club after Norwich sack

Liam Manning could soon return to management after being sacked by Norwich City as the odds shorten on him to become Port Vale’s next permanent manager.

Darren Moore was sacked on Sunday with Port Vale sitting at the bottom of the third tier following automatic promotion from League Two last season.

The Valiants had high hopes for this campaign after his stellar job last term, but results had not been good enough and their owners pulled the trigger after a crushing 5-0 loss to Huddersfield Town.

Numerous bosses have been touted for the vacant Vale Park role as they seek a new appointment, with Manning now a leading contender as he aims for a swift return to the dugout.

Odds slashed on Manning to Port Vale after recent Norwich sack

Manning was most recently in charge of Norwich, but his stint at Carrow Road lasted just five months, as he was sacked last month with the club sitting 23rd in the Championship.

Gary Rowett’s recent dismissal saw Manning installed as the favourite to become Oxford’s new manager last week, but reports have played down the chance of him returning to the Kassam Stadium soon.

He has only managed in the second tier since leaving Oxford in November 2023, but could soon return to League One with the struggling Valiants.

One of the UK’s leading bookmakers has drawn up odds for the next Vale boss, and Manning’s have shortened from 10/1 to 8/1 in recent days as a potential appointment looms.

Who else is in the running to become Vale’s new boss?

Vale could launch an ambitious bid to hire Manning as their new manager soon, but the bookies believe that a number of other out-of-work bosses are more likely to succeed Moore.

Liam Ridgewell is in contention to take over at Vale Park, as revealed by Football Insider, while Darren Ferguson is the early favourite to be Vale’s new manager, after he was sacked by Peterborough in October.

He comes in at 4/5 as the leading candidate, according to one major bookmaker, while ex-Northampton Town boss Jon Brady is deemed to be the second favourite for the position at odds of 2/1.

Matt Bloomfield follows at 5/1, with Manning up next and Mark Kennedy behind him at 14/1 odds.
