'Like a gherkin on a burger' - England fans pan Tottenham player for display in win against Slovakia

By Harry Sykes

Eric Dier scored for England in their 2-1 World Cup qualifier win against Slovakia on Monday night – but fans piled into him on Twitter to criticise his display.

Marcus Rashford scored the winner as Gareth Southgate’s side came from behind to take a five-point lead in World Cup qualifying Group F with two games to play.

England started poorly and were a goal down to Stanislav Lobotka’s opener, which was cancelled out by Dier before the break with a near-post header from a corner.

The Tottenham player was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes as he started in central midfield alongside skipper Jordan Henderson.

Despite the 23-year-old’s starring role, he was panned by supporters during what was a colourless and generally underwhelming performance from England at Wembley.
