Report: Liverpool academy sensation in line for prestigious award, fans will love this

By Matt Farr

Liverpool academy sensation Ben Woodburn has been nominated for the European Golden Boy award for 2017, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo report that the brilliant 17-year-old winger is set to go up against a long list of talent that includes the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Gabriel Jesus, and reported Liverpool targets Christian Pulisic and Ousmane Dembele.

Woodburn has burst onto the scene during his breakthrough campaign with Liverpool this term, having made his senior debut for the club in the 2-0 Premier League victory over Sunderland in November.

Liverpool’s teenage sensation has since made eight first team appearances for the club, earning his first Premier League start against Stoke at the weekend.

He was also handed his first senior call up to the Wales international side during last month’s international break, but he was an unused substitute for Chris Coleman’s side.

His promising displays over the course of the campaign have left a lasting impression on the Liverpool supporters.

Yet although Woodburn may not be considered one of the frontrunners for the award, Liverpool fans will still appreciate his nomination, and will hope he can continue his meteoric rise at Anfield.

His promising displays over the course of the campaign have left a lasting impression on the Liverpool supporters.

However, the nomination for one of Europe’s most prestigious individual honours may also come as a considerable surprise to Liverpool fans, given his irregular opportunities in the first team squad – at least compared to his rivals.

AS Monaco star Mbappe, for example, has taken the French league and the Champions League by storm this season, netting 19 goals and 11 assists from 33 appearances, despite being just 18-years-old.

Borussia Dortmund’s Dembele, meanwhile, has seven goals and 16 assists from 39 appearances for the German club, having reportedly snubbed a move to Liverpool last summer.

The European Golden Boy award recognises the best young player under 21 playing in one of Europe’s top tiers, and past winners include former Liverpool duo Raheem Sterling and Mario Balotelli.

Everton youngster Tom Davies was also nominated.

In other Liverpool news, contact has been made as this Liverpool defender transfer is reportedly on the cards.
