Kenny: Liverpool have agreed deal for 'perfect' new hire

Liverpool would not have announced Michael Edwards’ resignation unless they had a “prefect” replacement ready to go.

So says ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about imminent changes behind the scenes at Anfield.

Liverpool announced on 10 November that Edwards would step down as sporting director at the end of the season and he will be replaced by his assistant Julian Ward.

The 42-year old penned a lengthy open letter to supporters revealing his desire for a new challenge after a period of sustained success on Merseyside.

Edwards has masterminded the signings of Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Alisson Becker in recent years.

This site revealed back in October that Edwards planned to step down and that he did not have a new job in the offing.

Kenny suggests that Liverpool owners FSG will be ready to install Ward as soon as Edwards is out of the door.

“I’m sure Ward has been lined up for a long time,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Edwards has been behind a lot of the success they’ve had. He helped bring in Van Dijk, Alisson, Salah and the rest.

“This could be a massive loss but I don’t think they would have gone and announced it unless someone else was ready to step in.

“It’s a big role nowadays. All the top clubs have the best people, so they’ll think they’ve got the perfect candidate in Ward as well.”
