Liverpool are making transfer ‘mistake’, they should have signed Marc Guehi instead

Liverpool are currently facing a defensive crisis after suffering injuries to several players in recent weeks.

However, Arne Slot’s side are yet to make a January signing, with the transfer window closing on Monday (2 February).

Marc Guehi’s proposed summer move to Liverpool collapsed on deadline day after a £35million deal had been agreed with Crystal Palace

Liverpool decided against making a new offer for the England international this month despite their defensive issues.

Guehi then joined Manchester City for £20m, providing Pep Guardiola’s side with a significant boost.

Why have Liverpool decided not to make new signings?

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Liverpool are making a “mistake” by not bringing in defensive reinforcements before the transfer deadline.

Liverpool are currently without Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez and Alexander Isak through injury, while Ibrahima Konate has been on compassionate leave following the death of his father.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Liverpool’s transfer situation, Borson said: “They may not be a million miles away on some of the Uefa caps, but I think it’s most likely to be a self-imposed budget tightening.

“I think it’s a mistake. I don’t really understand why you’d go so far down the road in terms of your spending.

“You’d have a very favourable situation in the Champions League, a good enough position in terms of qualifying for Europe in the Premier League.

“They’re not going to win the Premier League obviously, but why risk everything by being short in defence? I don’t really understand that.”

Why Liverpool’s transfer decision could cost them dearly

Borson insisted Liverpool should have signed Guehi before he sealed a move to Man City.

“To be honest, if I was them I would have bought Guehi in the summer, but I definitely would have bought him in January,” said Borson.

“I think it was a strange decision not to. There are probably some questions about the manager, which is maybe in that mix as well. But I think it’s a mistake.

“I think they’re in a good enough position to be able to win the Champions League, or certainly go very deep in it. But I think they could easily find themselves short by at least one defender and I don’t really understand it.

“They’ve got a lot of games coming up. I would buy, but it does look like they are drawing a line under it.”

Liverpool have slipped to sixth in the Premier League table after failing to win any of their past five top-flight matches.
