Liverpool backed to ‘break the bank’ to complete ‘big’ Cody Gakpo deal – pundit
Liverpool should “break the bank” to sign Cody Gakpo during the January transfer window.
That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the race to sign the PSV star.
The 23-year-old is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup and has been one of the tournament’s breakout stars scoring three goals in four games.
Sources told Football Insider last month (26 November) that Man United have reached an “agreement in principle” with the attacker but will still have to convince PSV Eindhoven to accept a bid.
Dutch outlet Voetbal International reported last week (29 November) that Liverpool are also set to enter talks with Gakpo’s representatives.
McManus claims Liverpool should break the bank to sign Gakpo.
“We have all seen how good he has been at the World Cup,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“We also know Liverpool need to refresh their squad and sign a few players. For me, it all comes down to how much they are prepared to pay.
“The fee will have gone up a fair bit now after his performances at the World Cup, maybe there will be more teams interested in him too.
“That’s before you get to him being able to demand higher wages, again because of his performances in Qatar. Whoever wants to sign him needs to break the bank to get the deal done.
“Liverpool, if they are serious, need to do that. It would be a big statement.”

Gakpo scored 13 goals in 24 games for PSV before the World Cup break.
He has also registered a remarkable 17 assists this term.
In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed a “huge” Liverpool deal is on cards amid the latest from India and it “opens so many doors”.
