‘Liverpool backed to sign Jonathan David amid update on Newcastle’s Alexander Isak’

Liverpool have been tipped to take over the race for Lille star Jonathan David as rumours continue to swirl around Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United.

The Sweden international is one of the most prolific forwards in the Premier League, scoring 49 league goals over the last two seasons, and Liverpool could offer multiple players in a swap deal for Isak.

It remains to be seen if the 25-year-old will depart St James’ Park this summer, even despite the considerable interest in him, so it makes sense for Arne Slot‘s side to target potential alternatives.

David, who is currently lighting up the French league in the final third for Lille, has now been tipped for an outside chance of joining the Reds, with the star striker’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

Danny Murphy believes that Liverpool are unlikely to go “all out” to sign Isak, with David a far more money-sensible addition to the squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Liverpool to target Jonathan David free transfer over Alexander Isak

Speaking live on talkSPORT (16 April, 12:50pm), Murphy said: “High up the pitch, I think there will be some change. They’ll bring in a striker, but I’m not sure they’ll go all out on Isak.

“That’ll cost them a fortune. I don’t think it’ll happen, but there are some good strikers out there, like Jonathan David. If Darwin [Nunez] goes, they will have to bring in a striker, for sure.”

Arne Slot ready for Liverpool squad rebuild after Mohamed Salah boost

Football Insider verdict

With Mohamed Salah now confirming his future at Liverpool with a new contract, Arne Slot should have fewer worries heading into the summer transfer window, but there are still changes to make.

Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz are all being linked with exits at the end of the season, with supporters growing restless with a lack of clinical forwards in the final third.

The Reds have no chance of slipping up when it comes to the Premier League title, but having been knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup early, fans are disappointed with the campaign.

Of course, Slot will want to come back even stronger next season, which involves signing Virgil van Dijk up to a new contract at Liverpool and adding a natural-born striker to help Salah in the final third.

Cody Gakpo is the closest player in terms of goals to Salah, just 16 behind him in all competitions, and the addition of David for free would be an incredible piece of business.
