Liverpool bag extra £20m+ after deal confirmed – sources
Liverpool have cut more than £20million from their wage bill after several high-profile figures have moved on this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Senior stars Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara left the club following the expiration of their contracts on 30 June, while goalkeeper Adrian turned down a new deal.
Fabio Carvalho has also sealed a permanent exit away from Anfield after he joined fellow Premier League side Brentford in a deal worth £27.5million including add-ons on 12 August.
Alcantara is understood to have been the third-highest earner at Liverpool behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, having signed a 200,000-a-week deal following his arrival from Bayern Munich in 2020.
But the 33-year-old has now decided to call time on his career after enduring an injury-ravaged spell at Anfield.
Liverpool set for wage bill drop after summer exits
Matip earned around 100,000 per week at Liverpool, but the experienced defender is yet to find a new club since his time on Merseyside was brought to an end after eight years.
Although Adrian only made 26 appearances since signing from West Ham in 2019, the goalkeeper is believed to have netted £60,000 a week before deciding to return to his boyhood club Real Betis this summer.
Carvalho, who spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig and Hull City, pocketed roughly £40,000 a week prior to securing his big-money move to Brentford.
Sources have told Football Insider Liverpool have cut around £20.8million from their wage bill following their summer exits.
The Merseyside giants’ latest published accounts showed their wage bill stood at £373million in 2022/23 following a two-per-cent rise on the previous year.

Liverpool have had a quiet summer transfer window in terms of incomings after failing to make any new signings since announcing Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
But finance expert Stefan Borson revealed to Football Insider their signing drought is likely to be a choice made by the club’s directors as opposed to there being any finance-related concerns.
The Merseysiders were expected to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad last week, but the 25-year-old decided to remain with the La Liga club after being offered a new contract with improved terms.
Football Insider revealed on 18 August Liverpool will now wait until January to sign an A-list midfielder following the collapse of the Zubimendi deal.
