Kieran Maguire: Liverpool have just landed £15.4m windfall

Liverpool have banked at least £15.4million following their victory over AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

That is according to finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the undulating 3-2 thriller at Anfield on 15 September.

Jurgen Klopp’s men took all three points in their Champions League opener thanks to Jordan Henderson‘s laser-guided volley 20 minutes from time.

The six-time champions reached the quarter-finals of Europe’s top club competition in 2020-21.

In order to better that showing this season, the Merseysiders will have to qualify from arguably the strongest group in the tournament.

Any further wins over Milan, Porto and Atletico Madrid in Group B will net the Reds £2.4m per go.

And Maguire reveals that the prize money will be boosted by the number of draws that are played out during the group stage.

“It’s looking like £2.4m for a win,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“You will also get £13m for participation, of course. But, interestingly, you only get a third of that £2.4m figure if you draw.

“The leftover money from the draws goes into a separate pot which is then allocated to the teams that got a win.

“So there is a ripple effect and you can end up with more than £2.4m per win. So it isn’t actually a fixed figure.

Liverpool’s next Champions League fixture is away to Porto on 28 September.

They face Crystal Palace, Norwich and Brentford in the Premier League before that date.
