Liverpool ‘big surprise’ after Virgil van Dijk contract update
Liverpool will have no financial concerns about tying Virgil van Dijk down to a new deal – unless he is offered a mega-money Saudi Pro League contract.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider that it is a “surprise” to see the Reds let Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah enter the final six months of their contracts.
“Let’s see what happens at the end of the season, I’m enjoying my football,” the Liverpool captain said on his future following the 2-2 away draw at Arsenal on Sunday (27 October).
He added: “I’m feeling very good, physically and mentally. I’m in a good place and yeah nothing more can be said, I just want to keep enjoying the game.”
The Netherlands international will be 34 when the 2025-26 season kicks off but he remains in good form for Arne Slot’s side, who sit top of the Premier League.
Liverpool ‘can afford’ Van Dijk renewal, says Borson
Borson allayed fears about finances with the Merseysiders potentially needing to hand big-money renewals to Van Dijk, Salah and Alexander-Arnold in the coming months.
He told Football Insider: “Liverpool can afford it.
“Clearly, if Saudi want to make him an offer of £1million per week to come in as a figurehead signing – they won’t want to match that.
“But for a normal level of deal, they can certainly afford to renew Van Dijk’s deal.

“It’s surprising that they’ve allowed three big players to enter the last six months of their contracts.
“It’s a big surprise.”
