Liverpool blow Man City away as Pep Guardiola makes new transfer decision

Liverpool are set to blow Manchester City away after Pep Guardiola has made a new transfer decision at the Etihad Stadium.

The Reds secured the Premier League title last season as they brought to an end four years of Man City dominance.

Meanwhile, Guardiola’s side finished third in the table and failed to win a major trophy for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign – the Catalan manager’s first year in England.

Liverpool are certainly not resting on their laurels this summer after backing Arne Slot in the transfer market.

The Merseyside giants have already spent around £270million in this window after signing Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi and Freddie Woodman.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Liverpool can keep spending this summer as they look to agree a deal for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international, who registered 27 goals and six assists in 42 appearances last season, has told the Tyneside club he wants to explore a move away.

Football Insider revealed on 28 July Liverpool are increasingly “confident” of signing Isak after making him a top target.

A formal bid is expected to land at St James’ Park imminently after an initial approach was made by the Reds two weeks ago, with Newcastle valuing their prize asset at around £150million.

Liverpool outspend Man City after £120m reveal

The picture is slightly different at the Etihad after Guardiola warned he will quit Man City if he has to work with a large squad again next season.

It comes after the 54-year-old was forced to leave several players out of his matchday squad in the 2024-25 campaign.

Despite that, Man City had a busy start to the transfer window after signing Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Marcus Bettinelli last month.

Sverre Nypan completed his move to the Etihad a couple of weeks ago, while James Trafford became the club’s latest recruit when he rejoined Guardiola’s side from Burnley on Tuesday (29 July).

That deal has taken the Manchester giants’ spending in the current window to around £153million, almost £120million lower than Liverpool’s total, which will increase substantially if they sign Isak.

Man City make Tino Livramento transfer decision

There has been plenty of talk around Man City signing a new right-back this summer, with Newcastle’s Tino Livramento heavily linked with a move to the Etihad.

However, the Mail reported on Wednesday (30 July) the club’s incomings are now done after making six new additions.

The newspaper added there are no plans to bid for Livramento and there are no ongoing talks around signing a right-back.

Although Guardiola is clearly happy with his squad, Man City’s spending will still be considerably lower than Liverpool’s this summer.

While investing heavily doesn’t always work, Slot has added quality to his Premier League-winning side in multiple positions, and many will have them down as favourites to retain their title next season.
