Liverpool board make their feelings clear on sacking Arne Slot after ‘bust-up’

Liverpool chief executive Michael Edwards is more to blame than Arne Slot amid the ongoing Mo Salah saga.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who doesn’t think Slot is the problem at Liverpool.

Salah has said he has no relationship with Slot, and the 33-year-old looks set to leave Anfield in the January transfer window.

Slot had benched Salah for three consecutive games, before the Egyptian came out strongly against the club following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw at Leeds.

Arne Slot to ‘get the full backing’ at Liverpool

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Slot will continue to be backed by the Liverpool board.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness though insists that the club will still be expecting Slot to qualify for the Champions League.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Well, we discussed last week that I don’t think Slot is necessarily the problem. It seems to be above Arne Slot, and I’m looking at the Michael Edwards up there and that’s where I think the problems are.

I think that’s what Salah has been alluding to, saying that somebody in the club wants him out. I think Slot has sort of come in in clock shadow and therefore, I just think that Slot is going to be okay. I think the board have come out, and they’re going to stick with him, which they should do and I think he’s going to be okay.

I don’t think he is the root of the problem here, and so I think Slot will get the full backing and will carry on. If they don’t qualify for the Champions League next year, then I think Slot would be gone.

So you know that’s where I think it leaves him, but at the moment I don’t think he’s going to get the blame for this particular bust-up.”

Slot remains in need of Liverpool victories

Slot is still under pressure at Liverpool following a difficult couple of months for the club which has seen them slip behind in the race for the Champions League positions.

Liverpool’s title challenge looks to have ended due to their form, with 10 points now between them and leaders Arsenal.

The Reds welcome Brighton to Anfield next, where Salah could make his final appearance before he departs for the African Cup of Nations.
