Liverpool claim could spark Super League revival as club chief speaks out – pundit

Kevin Campbell has suggested the idea of a European Super League is not yet dead and buried after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez’s comments about Liverpool.

The former Arsenal striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed “something will have to be worked out eventually” in order to appease the likes of Perez and Los Blancos.

The Real Madrid chief made a fresh push for the introduction of a European Super League as he claims football is “sick” – with younger fans “losing interest” in the sport.

As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (2 October), insisted fans are being “deprived” of high-profile meetings between clubs like Real and Liverpool – who have met just nine times in 67 years.

The Merseysiders were one of 12 founding members of the Super League in 2021 – with fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Man United, and Tottenham also involved before pulling out after fan pressure.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are the only clubs still actively looking to revive the failed proposals.

Campbell insisted the discussion won’t go away, with “absolute fortunes to be earned” by top clubs.

He told Football Insider: “Look, the one thing we do know is that the Super League narrative won’t go away.

“You can hang your hat on that.

“Something will have to be worked out eventually.

“I think UEFA had to respond and change the Champions League, making the group stage bigger and all that stuff.

“But Florentino Perez is a wise old fox. He knows he cannot stop talking about the Super League because he needs people on board.

“There are absolute fortunes to be earned, and that’s what Real Madrid are in the business of.

“I don’t like it. We dodged a bullet the first time, but it just won’t go away.”
