Campbell fears for Joe Gomez after Liverpool news confirmed

Kevin Campbell has questioned why Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has signed a new long-term contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker fears the 24-year-old is hampering his England prospects by remaining at Anfield.

On Thursday (7 July), Liverpool confirmed Gomez had penned a new deal with the Reds.

The England defender is believed to now be under contract until the end of June 2027.

According to The Times‘ Paul Joyce (7 July), the centre-half told the club he wanted to stay and fight for his place next season.

Gomez was a bit-part player for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the 2021-22 campaign.

When asked by Football Insider if the ex-Charlton man is making the right decision, Campbell said: “Listen, it would be a great deal for Liverpool.

“I would question Joe Gomez though. At his age, to not be starting… How many games does he start in a season?

“I know Liverpool go for every trophy and he will play some games in the cups but is that really enough? He is an England international. In a World Cup year he should be thinking, ‘I want to be somewhere where I will play so I can get in the England squad.’

“If he feels comfortable and is happy with the opportunities he is getting fair enough. That is up to him.

“For me, I don’t think he is going to play enough next season.”
