‘Liverpool confident of agreeing Mohamed Salah extension’

Liverpool are still active in four competitions under Arne Slot this season but question marks linger about the future of talisman Mohamed Salah.

The 32-year-old and Slot have been coy about a potential contract renewal with his Anfield deal set to expire in June.

Saudi giants Al-Hilal have emerged as Salah’s most likely destination should he end his eight-year association with Liverpool.

But Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness, who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs and their boards, has shared the latest on a potential contract extension.

Mohamed Salah tipped to sign Liverpool deal in new superstar update

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness claimed Liverpool are “confident” Salah will sign on for at least another year.

However, he warned that signing potential replacements for the Egyptian, captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will “really push” the Reds under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in the future.

All three players are currently set to walk away from Liverpool for free at the end of the 2024-25 campaign – with Alexander-Arnold expected to join Real Madrid.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “These three players, the replacement cost is pretty high.

“This is why some fans have been urging Liverpool to get these contracts done.

“To bring in players of a similar quality would cost you an awful lot, and that would really push the PSR issues as well.

“Liverpool aren’t silly, they’ve played it right so far – so we’ll have to wait and see.

“I think they’re confident they can secure Salah for another year, it’s starting to look that way.

“Both sides are playing it close to their chests but I think if they win the league, Salah will go on.

“It ain’t broke, so don’t fix it.

“But looking forward, the replacements will be a tough one for Liverpool.

“They’ve got to find room for the academy talents and get the age balance right in the squad.

“I’m sure their computer and data analysis teams are running all sorts of algorithms to make sure they get it right.”

Liverpool set to join Tottenham in Marc Guehi race

Liverpool could pursue Crystal Palace and England star Marc Guehi in the upcoming summer window, with the defender set to enter the final year of his Selhurst Park contract.

Football Insider revealed on 4 February that Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle are among the sides set to battle it out for Guehi’s signature.

A move for the Palace captain could form part of the Reds’ plan to replace Van Dijk long-term.
