Liverpool could appoint Zinedine Zidane in ‘surprise’ twist – pundit

Liverpool have a big name coming in to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie believes the Reds may have eyed their next boss.

He also explained Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi is not a big enough name for the role, while remarking that appointing Zinedine Zidane would be an exciting move.

Liverpool will lose current manager Klopp at the end of the season, with the German making the exit announcement earlier in the campaign.

McAvennie believes that De Zerbi is doing well on the south coast, but has questioned his ability to deal with player egos in the Anfield dressing room.

The pundit also expressed his desire to see the Merseyside club continue to play entertaining football following Klopp’s exit.

“I just hope it is someone that has got the same philosophy as previous Liverpool managers,” he told Football Insider.

“Liverpool are all about attacking football and entertaining the crowd. I would hate to see that going away.

“De Zerbi is a good manager, but is he a big enough name for all these superstars in the dressing room, that’s the question you’ve got to ask.

“Graham Potter was doing it at Brighton, but went to Chelsea and couldn’t handle it. It wasn’t his fault, because everyone who has gone there since can’t handle it.

“De Zerbi is doing alright, but I think it will be someone else, I think there will be a name coming in. I don’t know who. It would be great if they got Zidane.”

Liverpool are going strong under Klopp this season, with the Reds in a Premier League title race alongside Man City and Arsenal.

The Anfield club are also into the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they take on Serie A side Atalanta.

It would certainly come as some surprise if they appointed Zinedine Zidane given he has been out of managerial work for three years, since he left Real Madrid for a second time in May 2021.
