Liverpool could land £10m ‘big bonanza’ – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Liverpool and other Premier League clubs could land up to “£10million” in revenue if top-flight games are taken overseas.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the issue is “worth a debate” and gave his support to Reds chairman Tom Werner’s idea.

Werner, speaking to the Financial Times (7 June), insisted he is “determined one day to have a Premier League game be played in New York City”.

However, Liverpool owner John Henry revealed that playing games worldwide is “not something that I advocate or am particularly interested in”.

Proposals for a 39th Premier League matchday played overseas were quashed with the help of FIFA’s then-president Sepp Blatter in 2008.

Liverpool plans for overseas games are ‘worth a debate’, says Wyness

Wyness claimed domestic fans could be accommodated abroad if the plans do go ahead and insisted the extra revenue would assist Premier League clubs.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “We could be looking at two potential matchdays with 10 clubs playing each week across the world.

“Different cities involved, you’d be looking at a potential £5-10million in extra revenue.

“You could tie in different trade missions with the different clubs, and there’s an opportunity to turn it into a bit of a British extravaganza.

“The government will be well-placed to make this a big bonanza for everybody.

“Of course, I’m not forgetting the fans.

“As I say, the loyal fans can be accommodated overseas. The revenue would assist the clubs and I think it’s worth a debate. I’m for it.”
