Liverpool could lose ‘next Tammy Abraham’ after journalist’s update – pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Divock Origi to emulate Roma striker Tammy Abraham if he leaves Liverpool for AC Milan this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed it would be “a real shame” to see the 26-year-old depart the Premier League having never nailed down a regular spot.

According to Fabrizio Romano (21 March), Origi is “more than tempted” by AC Milan’s contract proposal as the Italian giants line up a summer swoop.

The Belgian can leave Anfield as a free agent at the end of the season as his contract expires in June.

Origi has netted five goals this term despite being limited to just 533 minutes of action.

Whelan conceded the striker has “served his purpose” at Liverpool.

“It would be a real shame to see him leave without a proper go in the Premier League,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“But we know how much respect and admiration there is between him and Jurgen Klopp, even if he doesn’t play every week.

“He’s done so much for the club with some really important goals.

“Origi has had exactly the right attitude and character throughout his time at Liverpool.

“I do believe he needs regular game time. He’s probably served his purpose at Liverpool now.

“AC Milan might just be that trigger to reignite his career. We’ve seen Tammy Abraham doing just that at Roma, he could follow in his footsteps and be the next Abraham, in that regard.”

Liverpool

Abraham has scored 23 goals for Jose Mourinho’s Roma since departing Chelsea last summer (2021).

Origi has scored 40 goals in 171 Liverpool appearances – including a famous strike in the 2019 Champions League final.
