‘Liverpool could sell two first team stars ahead of Florian Wirtz arrival’

Liverpool may consider selling two first-team players to make room for the imminent arrival of Florian Wirtz.

Arne Slot’s side aren’t resting on their laurels after they secured the Premier League title in the Dutchman’s first season in charge of the club.

The Reds clinched the trophy with four matches still remaining, and despite not winning a single game in May, ended the season 10 points clear of Arsenal in second.

Liverpool have already confirmed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, and are looking to add a couple more players to their squad in the coming weeks.

Liverpool could sell starters

It looks as if Wirtz’s move to Liverpool is getting closer to happening, with Leverkusen currently considering a £109million bid for the midfielder.

The 22-year-old, who scored ten goals and picked up 14 assists in the Bundesliga, wants to join the Reds after rejecting Bayern Munich.

However, ahead of the move, Mail Sport’s Liverpool Correspondent Lewis Steele (28 May) is reporting that Darwin Nunez is likely to be leaving Liverpool this summer.

Steele added that a Diogo Jota departure isn’t completely ruled out either, with the striker suffering yet another injury-hit season at Anfield.

Nunez not good enough

Football Insider Verdict

Nunez joined Liverpool back in 2022, making the switch from Portuguese club Benfica for a reported £85million, the Reds’ most expensive signing ever.

However, it’s fair to say that the striker hasn’t lived up to his price tag, scoring just 25 league goals across his three seasons at the club.

Nunez’s Premier League stats at Liverpool

A running theme throughout Nunez’s time on Merseyside has been his poor finishing ability, and tendency to miss huge chances.

In the early stages you could forgive it as he was raw and still brought so much to the team in terms of pressing and work-rate, but at the age of 25 the forward is running into the same issues.

If Liverpool want to build on their recent unbelievable season, then the weak links need to be stamped out, and Nunez is the weakest of them all.
