‘Liverpool could sign multiple wonderkids’ after David Ornstein update
Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group are reportedly finally ready to found a multi-club model in the coming months.
As per The Athletic’s David Ornstein (29 March), FSG are exploring the purchase of Spanish club Malaga – with a delegation visiting the club’s facilities in February.
Qatari businessman Sheikh Abdullah Al Thani owns 51% of the club, while a Spanish hotel group own the remainder.
Malaga currently sit 15th in the Segunda Division after promotion from the third tier last term.
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has claimed the main benefit for Liverpool will be access to the club’s “superb youth setup”.
Liverpool will be eyeing ‘superb youth setup’ at Malaga, says Wyness
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted the Malaga deal is “definitely worth the effort for FSG”.
The Spanish club have produced the likes of Brahim Diaz, Dean Huijsen and Youssef En-Nesyri in recent years.
Season | Division | Finish |
2024-25 | Segunda Division | 15th (ongoing) |
2023-24 | Primera Federación | 3rd (promoted) |
2022-23 | Segunda Division | 20th (relegated) |
2021-22 | Segunda Division | 18th |
2020-21 | Segunda Division | 12th |
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Malaga is a club I’ve looked at for many years, in terms of finding ways to acquire it.
“It’s a very messy ownership situation with a Qatari investor and a local hotel owner.
“They’ve had legal battles and the club went out of La Liga, from the Champions League to the third division.
“It’s a great club with a big local fanbase. It could become another jewel in the crown in Spain.
“I think from Liverpool’s point of view, they’ll be looking at the superb youth setup as a benefit.
“That’s what FSG will be looking at. If they can get it stabilised, they can bring the club back into a profitable situation and getting back into La Liga.
“Malaga is definitely worth the effort for FSG.”
